ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Raksanna,
Artistic Director

Movement with intention. Stories with something to say.

Raksanna creates performances that ask dancers to bring technique, personality and emotional commitment to the stage. Her work spans choreography, theatrical production and ensemble leadership, with Egyptian dance as an enduring foundation and space for new artistic directions.

Let the music lead

Her published artistic philosophy places musical expression and an audience’s emotional response at the heart of the work. She values choreography that remains meaningful beyond any one cast, and the growth that happens when dancers commit to a shared artistic purpose.

Distinct art forms. A shared stage.

Her expanding repertoire brings belly dance, burlesque and acting into theatrical conversation. Each discipline retains its own history and vocabulary. A production can bring them together without treating them as interchangeable.

TABU reflects that expanding artistic direction. Other work includes Confessions of a Belly Dancer, The Fourth Pyramid: The Life and Legacy of Om Kathoum, and When Women Ruled the World: Journey thru Egypt.

From personal story to theatre

Confessions of a Belly Dancer grew from her book into a theatrical collaboration with Momo Kadous. Presentations in Off-Broadway New York, Kansas City, Detroit, and Chicago continued the series with stories of dancers’ lives and original choreography, illustrating her interest in performance that connects artistic expression with lived experience.

Developing dancers, building a company

Raksanna leads Near East Dance Ensemble and Desert Flames. Near East Dance Ensemble offers a community path into group performance without an audition, subject to participation requirements. Desert Flames is the advanced, auditioned troupe for dancers ready for a deeper commitment.

Both ensembles can take part in work across genres. Their identities are shaped by their level of commitment and development, with repertoire determined by the production. Entry requirements and cross-training are discussed with Raksanna.
