Classic glamour. Your own expression.

Discover classic and neo-burlesque with Raksanna. Explore the history, techniques and theatrical possibilities of this expressive art form. No previous dance experience is required.

What you will learn

Explore the history and styles of burlesque while developing shimmies, bumps, movement patterns and choreography. Learn how musicality, gesture and theatrical play create a performance, and discover ways to express confidence, sensuality and personality through dance.

Belly dance and burlesque are distinct art forms. Raksanna teaches their differences while giving each its own artistic context.

What happens in a class?

Begin with a warm-up, then work on technique, across-the-floor movement, drills, patterns or choreography. Depending on the session, choreography may include feather boas, fans, gloves or an outer shirt.

Can I participate at my own comfort level?

Yes. Movement and participation options are offered throughout class. Floorwork includes modifications for students who cannot or prefer not to go down to the floor. You will not be pressured to take part in something that makes you uncomfortable.

Is there nudity?

No. Class choreography may include theatrical removal of gloves or an outer layer, with coverage maintained. The emphasis is on suggestion, expression and performance. This is not a pole-dance class.

What should I wear and bring?

Wear exercise clothing you can move in, such as yoga pants and a fitted top. Bring heels suitable for dancing if you feel comfortable wearing them; heels are optional. Dance shoes are also an option. Ask Raksanna about footwear for the planned choreography.

Props and supplies vary by session and are explained at the first class. Some loaner props are available to share. Students are encouraged to bring their own, and Raksanna can suggest sources when specific items are needed.
